1839  CROSS and BYE POSTS - Mourning envelope from London addressed to Tytherley, Stockbridge, Hants, showing on the front a Twickenhan Penny Post together with a Stockbridge Penny Post; on the reverse is a TP Teddington and also a Kingston date stamp for SE 11 1839.  Interesting envelope as not only is its seal still in tact...


...as the envelope has been slit open at the bottom, but also because it is an early example of a mourning envelope - mourning envelopes became more widely used after the introduction of the Penny Post as this facility gave the less affluent people the ability to send such envelopes.
